The Farm

American Legion Birthday Bash

A past celebration of the American Legion’s founding. Members of Post 5, Unit 5, and Squadron 5 gathered at Landmark Family Restaurant for dinner, fellowship, and recognition of the Legion’s century of service.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress on September 16, 1919, but many posts hold annual birthday observances in March, marking the original Paris Caucus of March 15–17, 1919, where the organization was founded.

Legion Riders

The American Legion Riders is the motorcycle-riding extension of the Legion family. Founded in 1993, ALR members participate in fundraising rides for scholarships and veteran charities, escort military funerals as part of the Patriot Guard, and ride in community parades and Memorial Day observances.

To join Legion Riders, you must first be a member of The American Legion, the Auxiliary, or Sons of the American Legion.

Eligibility

To join The American Legion at Post 5, you must have served at least one day of active military duty during one of the following qualifying periods, and have been honorably discharged or still be serving honorably:

April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918 (World War I)
December 7, 1941 to present (any service since the start of World War II)

The “Legion Act” of 2019 effectively means anyone who served honorably after Pearl Harbor is eligible — no more “war era” gaps. If you served honorably since December 7, 1941, you qualify.

Shanklin Attaway American Legion Post 5 was chartered in 1925, one of the earliest American Legion posts in Georgia. For over a century, generations of Rome and Floyd County veterans have served their community through Post 5.

About Our Namesake

The post is named in honor of Shanklin Attaway. (Details about his service and connection to Rome to be written by the Post Historian.)

A Century of Service

Full history to be written. The American Legion itself was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, wartime veterans organization, and is today the nation’s largest wartime veterans organization with over 1.8 million members across nearly 13,000 posts.

When to Display the Flag

The flag should be displayed on all days when the weather permits, and especially on these days:

Two people are needed to properly fold the flag. The flag should be folded ceremoniously into a triangle shape, with only the blue field of stars visible at the end.
