Membership
Eligibility, how to join, and why Post 5 membership matters.
The American Legion is the largest veterans service organization in the United States, with over 1.8 million members across nearly 13,000 posts worldwide. We were founded in 1919, and Post 5 has served Rome since 1925.
If you served at least one day of active military duty during a qualifying period and received an honorable discharge (or are still serving honorably), you’re eligible to join.
Three Ways to Belong
The American Legion Family at Post 5 includes three organizations. Pick the one that fits — and you can support the others’ activities regardless.
- The American Legion (Post 5) — for veterans who served honorably
- Auxiliary (Unit 5) — for eligible female relatives of veterans
- Sons of the American Legion (Squadron 5) — for eligible male descendants of veterans

Already a Member?
If you’re already a member nationally and want to transfer your membership to Post 5, you’ll need your current membership card, a copy of your DD214, and the annual dues payment. Submit them with our application form or contact our Adjutant, Rick Hunt, at (912) 312-0258.
